How To Build A Championship Wrestling Program

Spend a half-hour with Scott Legacy and you quickly realize why he has been able to build a national powerhouse wrestling program at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont.

This year (Scott’s 24th as head coach), Mount Anthony Union High School established a national high school record by recording the school’s twentieth consecutive state team championship.  That’s not too shabby for a coach who inherited a team that was the conference doormat and was almost disbanded as a varsity sport by school officials.

How could a coach elevate a wrestling program in just four short years to state championship status?  What ingredients went into building a team literally from the ground floor?  What intangibles did Scott Legacy bring to the Mount Anthony Union wrestling team that produced such a precipitous rise to success?

One of the first things that Scott prioritized was starting elementary and middle-school programs and is quick to credit a ton of individuals, all of whom helped get those programs organized and well-run.

Scott insisted on his kids being totally committed and dedicated to the task of becoming highly-competitive grapplers.  He also demanded excellence in the classroom and becoming community-minded.  That’s one of the things that I most admire about Scott Legacy – he’s not only developed championship wrestlers (119 individual state champions at last count)  – he’s helped develop high-quality young adults!

Scott also realized that his squad needed to wrestle against the very best competitive programs regionally and nationally.  Winning within your section is one thing; it’s quite another feat to excel against elite programs.  He started scheduling his team for some of the toughest tournaments he could find – and his kids held their own!

Scott’s audio interview appears on www.grapplerstrength.com.  Don’t miss this great interview.  Scott shares his philosophy and practice strategies that have been integral in helping Mount Anthony Union High School set the national high school record for most consecutive state championships.
