Tip of the Week
April 15, 2008 The Secret to Success: Hard Work!
One of my favorite things about developing the content for GrapplerStrength.com is doing the audio interviews. You see, I get to know so many great coaches, trainers and professionals associated with the sport of wrestling.
I consider myself extremely lucky to do these audio interviews because, quite literally, I have the opportunity to speak with individuals who have achieved success at the highest levels! How cool is that to have the opportunity to learn from greatness.
The list includes former national and world wrestling champions, nationally-acclaimed high school and collegiate coaching legends, internationally-renown sports nutritionists and sport psychologists, Olympic doctors and some of the top strength and conditioning professionals in the world.
We are getting such rave reviews about our audio interviews that we’re going to make every effort to post more on GrapplerStrength. If you haven’t taken the opportunity to check-out the audio interviews, we encourage you to do so. I always walk away from the interviews learning something new to help our young wrestlers!
Perhaps, the major theme that seems to standout for me with every guest is their HARD WORK, commitment to excellence and the willingness to go the “extra mile” to excel. It’s not just talent or innate ability like so many people assume. You don’t achieve greatness on sheer talent alone.
There are a lot of athletic kids out there with the ability to excel on the state or national level. However, only a small percentage of those kids are willing to visit what I like to refer to as “the land of discomfort”.
Have you ever watched any of the top ultimate fighters training for a match? Have you ever heard about the training sessions of the legendary Dan Gable or John Smith? These guys take training and conditioning to a level that most wrestlers can only dream about!
You see, to wrestle aggressively and relentlessly for every second of every match, you must be willing to take your training to a much higher level. Greatness isn’t handed to you. You have to earn it the old fashioned way – through sweat equity!
I’m sorry to disappoint you if you were expecting some magic formula for success. You can eat like a champion, possess cat-like quickness with great strength and awesome technique, but unless you have the “heart” to really challenge your conditioning level; you probably won’t achieve greatness.
The guys who give back to the great sport of wrestling by agreeing to our interviews have all paid the price. All of them overcame some type of adversity or obstacle along the road to becoming a champion! All of them know first-hand what “the land of discomfort” feels like. But they pushed through that lactic acid build-up that shuts-down most athletes and learned to go beyond the normal limits of training. Again, the great ones achieved greatness through hard work consistently throughout the year!
What are you going to do today to make yourself a more conditioned wrestler who can bring it 100% for every second? It lies within you; bring it out today!
